Mistakes Made by Expats in Thailand
There is a famous saying in Thailand, "some men leave their brains in immigration at Bangkok Airport." And we are not talking about stupid guys here; we're talking about men who have been successful all their lives and are highly intelligent!
At some stage in Thailand, most grown men have been outsmarted or scammed by beautiful 20 year old girls, who look like butter wouldn't melt in their mouths.
Thailand does something to the male psyche that even scientists have failed to explain! The need to stay in the "land of smiles" has convinced some guys to relinquish their successful careers behind in Europe, America and Australia to set up base in South-East-Asia.
The passion is usually driven by a beautiful young woman, who you instantly fell in love with when your eyes met across a smoky brothel. But not all men fall in love with working girls; some work in hotels, restaurants or have university educations and good jobs.
Vast fortunes have been made and lost within the borders of this amazing country. Some men are successful and never look back, while some lose everything, including their common sense, sanity and dignity.
Initially a guy will come on vacation first, maybe 2 or 3 times. He will fall in love with a "working girl," and agree to pay her so much money every month, so she doesn't have to sell her body anymore. The guy usually goes back to his home country first, but keeps sending the girl the money, in full belief she has gone back to the bosom of her family in a village in Udon Thani. But in reality, the moment the guy left for the airport, the girl was back in the bar looking for her next catch.
I have personally known girls who have 3 or 4 European guys sending them money each month, with their "boyfriends" 100% sure they have stopped working the bar!
When the girls lose the money gambling or give it to their Thai boyfriends, they e-mail their European cash cow, claiming that Papa in the village fell out a tree onto the communal buffalo, and now she need more money for hospital fees for Papa and a new animal to pull the plough. Believe me! This happens!
The "boyfriend" runs to the bank like Cal Lewis, in order to help out his little darling, and the unfortunate situation she found herself within.
Other guys get duped into buying a beer bar, with the promise of untold riches from the previous owner who had cooked the accounts to make it seem like the Hard Rock Café! What you should really know is that to make a small fortune in Thailand, you have to bring a big fortune with you!
Some guys buy large houses and businesses in their Thai wife or girlfriend's name because the foreign ownership laws are painstaking to circumvent. Sometimes it worked, other times she leaves him at the first opportunity, penniless, unable to even get a flight back home.
Don't for one second think all Thai girls operate in such a manner, but the amount of hard luck stories are stuff of legends. I personally blame the men for being so gullible, believing everything that came out of her sweet mouth, blinded by the beauty and seductive environment of this incomparable nation.
